---------
“Shooting star! Make a wish, Jack.”
“Tha’s a silly superstition, Rose!” The Doctor sounded disapproving but he was grinning fondly, pleased with the quaint little tradition, Jack could tell.
He looked down at Rose’s smiling, happy face, brighter than a sun and couldn’t help the thought that flitted through his mind.
This. Us. Together forever across the universe
--------
“When the war’s over, we’ll--oh, I wish--” Estelle stops, doesn’t finish the treacherous thought, hides her face against his chest for a long moment before looking up at him with a brittle smile and wet eyes.
“Come back,” she whispers as she buries herself in his arms.
He tightens his embrace. “I will,” he lies.
--------
“Happy Christmas, Jack!”
Jack chuckles at his slightly tipsy team.
“Don’t look so enthused,” Gwen remarks wryly.
Jack arches an eyebrow. “Do you know how many Christmases I’ve lived through? It does take a little bit of the shine off.”
“Oh, now you can’t be totally disenchanted with the holidays. Make a Christmas wish, Jack. Maybe it’ll come true,” she teases.
He smiles because it’s easier than screaming.
He doesn’t make promises anymore, doesn’t believe in wishes and dreams that never come true, that never bring happiness.
