“Stop fidgeting,” Kaylee teased lightly. “He’s going to love you.”

“I think it’s normal to feel nervous when meeting a girl’s father,” Simon rationalized aloud.

“Still don’t see why we can’t go,” Jayne complained.

“Tomorrow,” Kaylee rebuked lightly. “Ya’ll can all come over tomorrow.”

“You might want to watch your back, Doc,” Mal warned with a grin, clearly enjoying Simon’s predicament.

“And your backside,” River added.

Simon frowned in consternation, unable to discern whether River was teasing or actually using her abilities.

Mal’s grin widened, his expression full of anticipation.

Simon felt a shiver of dread.

--------

Simon hadn’t had a concrete image of Kaylee’s hometown but he’d had more than a vague expectation based on how many border planets he’d since visited.

Despite the small size and relative obscurity of the unnamed moon--though Kaylee said it was known as Silva to all its inhabitants--it was relatively prosperous, much to his surprise.

He was taken aback when people called and greeted Kaylee happily, moving to swarm her with welcomes.

“It’s good to see you, girl!”

“You come to visit your Daddy?”

“Who’s your man, little Kay?” one of the women asked.

Kaylee grinned happily. “Everyone, this is Simon. It’s great to see ya’ll, but my Pa’s waitin’ for us,” Kaylee begged off as she started to drag Simon through the small knot of people.

“Good luck!” Came the chorus. “You’ll need it!” Someone laughed.

Frankly, Simon was becoming more worried by the second.

--------

“It’s not much,” Kaylee said with a little embarrassment, “But it’s home.”

The house was small and crude by Core standards but obviously among the best here.

“Kaylee!” Is the first thing Simon hears as a man hurries to meet them, snatching Kalyee up into a tight embrace.

The first thing he notices, with a bright flash of jealousy, is how handsome the man is; with Core perfect teeth, intense blue eyes, and a well formed body.

“Look at you!” the man says with laughter and affection before kissing Kaylee soundly. “How are you, baby girl?”

Kaylee simply laughs happily, making no move from his arms. “I’m perfect,” she says.

Simon clears his throat, drawing their attention.

“And who’s this?” He asks Kaylee as he smiles a mite too widely at Simon who feels a bit hunted without quite knowing why.

“This is Simon, Daddy. Simon, this is my Pa,” Kaylee says with glee and mischief.

“Your, your--this is your father?” Simon trips over his words, filled with disbelief. The man looks to be Mal’s age, much too young to have a daughter Kaylee’s age.

“Just call me Jack, Simon,” says her father as he extends a hand.

Simon takes the outstretched hand and finds himself being pulled into an enthusiastic embrace, tensing when he feels a firm hand slip a little too low. He’s released with a hearty clap to the shoulder.

“So, are you the one who’s stolen my baby’s heart? She's never brought anyone home to meet me, you know,” Jack asks with cheer.

And for all that Jack looks young and despite his carefree expression--he thinks that this must be where Kaylee gets all her effervescent happiness--Simon has the inkling that this man was carefully judging him and deciding whether he's good enough for Kaylee.

“Well, come on in for dinner, you two. I’m sure there’re a lot of things to talk about,” Jack says as he brushes past them.

Simon starts with a yelp, manfully ignoring Kaylee’s giggles.

So that’s what everyone was warning him about, he thinks mournfully as he surreptitiously rubs his abused flesh.

Mal was definitely going to regret it the next time he was shot, Simon would make sure of it.

Yay!!! Adorable. Oh, Jack, Jack, Jack. You and your wandering hands.

BTW, I got your gift when I got back from my Not-In-Laws' house. What a fantastic surprise! I wasn't expecting it at all. I feel so bad for slacking on the cards this year, too... Maybe if I feel better soon, they'll be New Year's Cards, eh?

You're the best. Thank you so much!!! ::big hug::
