Character(s): Joyce and Buffy Summers.
Challenge: #71 a truth and a lie
Word Count: 200
---------
“Mom! That was so badass! How did--where did you--”
Joyce chuckled.
“How did I gain the courage to attack him with an ax and where did I learn?”
Buffy nodded as she regarded her mother with respect and awe.
It was an expression that Joyce missed.
“Oh honey, he was trying to hurt you. That’s all I needed.”
It was a lie.
Or rather, it wasn’t the entire truth.
But what else could Joyce do? What could she possibly say to explain the ferocious fury that had led her to take a weapon and wield it without hesitation at the sight of her daughter at the mercy of a violent killer?
She certainly couldn’t tell Buffy about the dreams. Those night-time fantasies where she was a Shield-Maiden of the House of Eorl, sworn to protect and defend.
Should she admit she was intimately acquainted with the feel of weapons--the comforting weight of cool steel in her grasp--because of the vivid dreams where she fought alongside kith and kin for the safety of her land and her people? Was she to confess these flights of fancies in the harsh light of day?
Nonsense.
They were just dreams.
