To be honest, it's not a complete fusion. Lots of similarities but lots of differences too. For example, John's dad isn't new money, their family has been wealthy for awhile so he's not as driven as Lionel but he does expect his sons to conform to what he expects of them
The characterization of John is a little hard to buy
Well, I figure that John is a little purposeless because his father has thwarted all of his plans for the things he wants to do because they're no ambitious or proper. I mean, learning to fly? He can just pay some guy to fly his Learjet for him! Why would John need to do anything but learn how to manage the company and makes lots of money? And John hates it. And his father (no where as evil and Lionel, I assure you, just very controlling) thinks that finding his son smoking pot is a big no no. Very bad for public image. John isn't exactly doing lines of coke off a hooker's stomach or anything, his Dad's just very traditional.
And the sex? Well, John's young and he won't say no when he's jumped by an attractive person. And considering that he's hot and rich? Lots of jumping. He's gotten used to lovin' and leavin' 'em because he's not interested in being someone's bank account.
I really think that a lot of what we get for SGA Sheppard is shaped by his time in the Air Force, his time on combat. It's something that a young, pampered <25 wouldn't necessarily have. John would have become very jaded, I think, surrounded by the type of people that his wealth attracts.
And Rodney wouldn't fit Lex as well because of his genius. He'd find a purpose, throw himself into research and development, be giddy that he can spend Daddy's money to fund his toys. And he definitely wouldn't be speeding or doing drugs, for fear of what damage it might cause his intellect. Rodney wouldn't development the same issues as Lex (the whole, 'I don't want to be my father' thing) which John seems more inclined to.
