“You know, when Sam and I were kids there was this one Christmas--” Dean stopped, scrutinized Castiel’s serene and unsurprised expression. “Am I telling you something you already know?” he questioned.

Dean was still caught off guard whenever Castiel expressed anything resembling humor but he had to admit that the angel’s eyes were definitely mischievous. “Are you referring to when I spent hours following you as you broke into someone’s house and stole a little girl’s presents?”

Dean gaped. Just a little. “You were there?”

If Castiel hadn’t been an angel, Dean would have said he looked proud. “Who do you think guided you to that home? To those particular gifts?” Castiel definitely looked self-satisfied.

“It’s your fault Sammy got chick gifts?” Dean grinned. “Oh, this is awesome. Wait ’til I tell Sam--but, wait, why the hell would it matter? I was a kid!”

Castiel sighed, Dean would swear to it though he’d bet Sam would never believe him.

Then, Castiel was as intense as every other time he had some vital knowledge to impart. “You focus far too much on material gifts, Dean. That day, do you believe it is lessened by a lack of toys, ill-gotten or not? Was it about presents, Dean? Or about you and your brother? About affection and love? What you feel here,” Castiel pressed a hot hand to Dean’s chest, right above his heart, an exceptionally intimate gesture when coupled with Castiel’s open expression. “That feeling, that is important. That is what matters. You know that, better than most.”

Tentatively, Dean brought his hand to cover Castiel’s own. “Yeah,” he began thickly (this was why he hated chick flick moments!), “I do, I do know that, Cas.”

They existed in silence for a moment with only the whisper of breath to mark the passage of time.

“Still, eggnog and pie are important, too.”

Castiel arched an eyebrow, skeptically. “Only if one is Dean Winchester.”

“Dude! Was that a joke? That was totally a joke. Ha! Merry Christmas, Cas.” Dean grinned brilliantly, happy and joyful for reasons other than gifts and eggnog and even pie.

Castiel’s answering smile was not as large but no less intense.
