He stifled any sound of pain his throbbing body wanted him to emit as well as the fleeting thought that this wasn’t his ideal Christmas.
“You’re not dyin’ are ya’?” a low voice questioned.
Adrenaline shot through him, dulling the pain and giving him the push he needed to move.
A fairly fit male, younger than himself, dark-skinned and considerably less muscled. British too.
“Guess not. You’re the Batman right? What is it with you superheroes? Can’t have any kind of normal name, can you? ‘S always gotta be The Batman, The Superman, The Spiderman, The Doctor. Notice that fifty percent of three-fourths of those names consists of ‘man’ and fifty-percent period is an animal. Not much originality. ”
Batman did not stare in disbelief.
He’d already started taking stock of their surroundings and any possible exits.
“We’re stuck,” the man informed him with disturbing cheer. “Unless the Editri left you with some explosives. Or a sonic screwdriver,” he added sarcastically.
“Editri.” This was the first suggestion he’d had that this man actually knew something.
“They’re takin’ kids off the street and harvestin’ their organs. But you already knew that.”
Batman said nothing.
“Suppose a city like Gotham is perfect for’em. Lots of runaways and no one to miss ‘em. S’why we were sent out, to stop ‘em.”
“We?”
There were explosions.
The man’s smile was vicious. “We.”
“And who are you?”
“You can call me Mickey.”
The door was blown in.
“Oi! Mickey! Not the time for makin’ new friends! You’re missin’ all the fun!”
Mickey grinned before taking off after the spiky-haired blond.
