Summary: There's a little boy on Elm Street that likes to climb trees...
----

"What’re you reading, kid?”

Thomas started, felt his balance shift as he began to slide from his perch amongst thick tree branches. He quickly—desperately—scrabbled to keep his seat. The fear was all that he could focus on and the mental chant he gave to ‘not fall! Don’t fall!’. Thomas clutched at the sturdy tree branch with his thighs, and arms, hugged it like his life depended on it and breathed.

Only then did a few things register. First, he’d sacrificed his book for his life. Second, someone had almost killed him!

Thomas looked down at the worried looking man who was standing under his branch with his arms outstretched. Thomas’s book lay at his feet.

“Jesus, kid! Don’t fall off and kill yourself!”

“I wasn’t!” Thomas denied hotly. “You’re the one that surprised me!”

“Sorry!” the guy called up. “But you’re in my tree!”

Thomas stared. He swallowed the heated denials that wanted to claim the tree because he’d never even seen this man so how could Thomas’s favorite tree belong to him? It had been Thomas who took shelter in its leaves for weeks and had started to wear a smooth seat out of a rough barked branch.

Then he noticed the boxes on the porch. Obviously the house that had stood silent and abandoned, a paradise for a lonely boy with too much imagination, had been sold.

Once he made this realization, Thomas reluctantly let go of his branch and climbed down slowly. “Do you live here now?” Thomas couldn’t help but ask the grinning man.

“Yeah, I do. Well, me and my friend Cas. What’s your name, kid?”

Thomas picked up his book and attempted to smooth the bent pages. “I’m Thomas Duncan MacKenzie"

"Well, careful in that tree, Tommy. I don't need your parents after me because you fell off and broke something."

And that was how Tommy first met Dean Winchester.

~*~

Tommy was good at sneaking, at stilling perfectly and quieting his breaths without a twitch or sharp cry to give him away.

Mr. Winchester still waved at him every time Tommy snuck out to watch as he fixed his car.

That was, until, on a not remarkable day..."You gonna keep watching or do you wanna learn about my baby, Tommy?"

"Your baby?" Tommy asked. "I thought she was a '67 Chevy Impala?"

Mr. Winchester grinned widely. "Well, looks like there's hope for you yet, kid. Come'ere, I'm changing her oil, which is important because..."

~*~

Tommy met Cas the third time Dean invited him to help with his baby.

"Dean," a voice called, which dragged both Dean and Tommy from under the Impala.

"Cas?" Dean said, using some kind of weird adult telepathy that Tommy still hadn't gotten the hang of because they were clearly saying something to each other without words.

"You must be Thomas," the serious man, Cas, stated unequivically as he stared Tommy down with serious eyes.

"Yes. Nice to meet you, sir." Tommy straightened his spine and fell back on formality in the face of such an adult.

Cas nodded and started his return to the house. "Likewise. When you are both finished, there are chocolate chip cookies and lemonade waiting for you in the kitchen."

Dean and Tommy shared a look and followed after him quickly.

They were the best chocolate chip cookies ever.

~*~

"Tommy, where are you going?"

Tommy reluctantly trotted back to his mother after sending a longing look towards the door.

"To Dean's house, Mom. He going to show me how to change the filter of his car and then there're going to be pie."

His mother looked surprised. "Is Dean your new friend?"

"He just moved onto the block, Mom. Him and his friend Cas. They're really cool."

"I don't want you bothering the neighbors, Tommy--"

"I'm not!" Tommy protested. "Dean said I could come over whenever he was working on his car!"

"Okay. But I want to meet your new friends. I'll walk you over."

Tommy wanted to die. This was going to be so embarrassing! His mom meeting Dean, who was super cool, and Cas who was really nice.

"Hey, Tommy. And you must be the kid's Mom. Nice to meet you, I'm Dean Winchester" Dean said when he caught sight of them.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Winchester." Looking at the expression on his Mom's face, Tommy had the sinking feeling that he might not be allowed to visit again.

"Why don't we go inside, Cas made pie."

When Tommy's Mom was out of hearing range, Dean nudged him. "Don't worry, kid. Cas'll charm her socks off. Moms love him."

Dean was right and Cas was awesome!

~*~

"Girls are weird," Tommy said as he helped Dean scrub down the Impala.

"Are they?" Dean asked and Tommy could totally tell that Dean was laughing at him on the inside.

"They giggle. I heard Jenni and her friends talking about how cute you and Cas were, and today, in class, Deirdre called me adorable."

"Tommy?" Dean called for his attention, and he looked serious, which he almost never did. "Don't ever tell me about what Jenni and her friends giggle about, okay?"

Tommy nodded.

"Also, stop trying to figure girls out 'cause you won't be able to do it. Pass me that wrench, would ya?"

Tommy accepted the wisdom solemnly and passed Dean the wrench.

"Almost done here. I think we have ice cream today. Up for it?"

Tommy gave him his best 'duh' look and Dean chuckled. "Why'd I even ask?"

~*~

"Tommy did great today, Cas. He's going to be awesome when he gets his own ride," Dean praised.

Tommy beamed.

Cas looked indulgent. "You know you can't keep him, Dean."

Dean pretended to pout and Tommy rolled his eyes. Dean and Cas could be so silly sometimes.

Dean can't have Tommy; I want to keep him!

He's so adorable and Dean and Tommy working on the Impala = cutest mental image, ever.

It makes so much sense that Dean would be good with kids, especially kids as cool as Tommy and that Castiel would be able to unintentionally ~dazzle~ mothers everywhere.

I really really loved your fictional kid, jsyk :D

Wow. Tommy's blushing, but he says that he quite likes his room and he wouldn't give up Cas's cookies for love or money.

I'm really happy that you liked it. *preens and twirls with glee*

Aww, Dean would be such a great Dad! It still makes me sad that there's hardly any chance in canon that this will ever happen, but whatever, I love your story! I'm so happy after reading this.

I love the part with the cookies, it's so adorable.

And Tommy's mom being enchanted by Castiel... that's a great idea.

If you think about it, Dean did help raise a kid (Sam).

I'm so glad you liked it. Thanks so much for the lovely comment!

Pfft, Tommy should run away and join the circus. And by circus I mean Winchesters. Same thing, really. :D

this was amusing and fun. I want to be Tommy, dammit. my dad never taught me how to fix up old cars.

Don't think Tommy hasn't tried. Cas gives him cookies and talks to him about how sad his Mom would be without him.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

(My Dad tried, but I was like 9 and preferred my books. I'm gonna have to see if that offer's still open.)

I'm still gleeful that you've joined this bandwagon.

I'm not surprised. XD Somehow Cas doesn't strike me as particularly good at talking someone down, though.

:D I did, quite.

(My dad used to show me what he was doing when he tinkered, but he hasn't for a while because I've had school and work and he's had work and basically there's no time.)

:D OH, ME TOO. god it's bad, though, I haven't shipped anything this hard for almost a year and I'd forgotten what it was like. I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE.
